Your mission statement is to be alert and vertical for the majority of your life. To achieve this, you need to work your mind and your body. This is nonnegotiable.

We all play them, dont we?

I dont want to do this dishes; maybe my husband will do them I dont want to go to work; maybe I can call in sick I dont want to clean the bathroom; maybe my son will do it without being told this time and my favorite: I dont want to exercise; Ill start tomorrow, or just drink more diet soda

In each of these situations, we pretend something that isnt soand we know it. Your husband isnt going to do those dishes unless you ask him; your boss is not going to believe youre sick when you really arent; and well, your soncome on!

Each one of these really requires you to be honest with yourself. Especially the last one. How many people do you know who got healthier by drinking more diet soda, or eating more low-fat ice cream? They only become healthier by changing their mind setand stop playing mind games.

I have written extensively about Mind, Mouth and Muscle: focusing on the mental part of fitness. In most cases it is THE real struggle in improving your health. I just held a contest on WMZQ-FM radio in Washington, DC between two women struggling with their weight. I asked each to write a weekly blog about their personal challenges during the 8 week competition. I was amazed by their candor. One admitted to running to the fridge each time she was stressed; the other talked about her couch almost whispering to her to sit down on it and be comforted.

Each revealed the mental battle they had to conquer in order to improve their fitness. And you know whatthey both succeeded!

The hardest part of their struggle was just getting into a daily routine of healthy thinking. For several weeks on their blogs, they honestly recorded their struggles just to keep going. At the beginning, I had each one do a minimal amount of physical exercise. Each day they had to keep moving a little bit more than the day before.

But once they started feeling better about themselves, their personal mind game evaporated. Their mind game turned into a mind set: their confidence began to build, and everything changed. Their daily routines now included physical activity and healthy eating; they felt better; they began to get compliments from friends and family. All these factors continued to build their confidence, and increased their zeal to succeed. This new-found energy inspired them to keep going. Each began to push herself to do more. With each new day came a healthier mind set, a healthier outlook on life, and a healthier body.

The funny thing is, that when you read their blogs now, their way of thinking is so positive and energetic. They even think differently now. Their mental transformations happened without them even noticing!

This will happen for you too. Just take the simple step of doing a little bit of healthy living each day. On the next day add one little thing to it, and in no time, youll be thrilled at how much better you sleep, how good you feel, and how you beat your mind at its own game.
